Slag cement is made by grinding granulated blast furnace slag, and Texas has no blast furnaces. The granules arrive by ship, get ground on the Houston Ship Channel or imported already ground through Houston terminals, and move inland from there. That geography sets the price everywhere else in the state: the material cost is the same in Dallas as in Houston, and the difference is freight.

Concrete producers in every metro buy slag cement as a portland replacement for cost, heat and durability. Stabilization contractors and geotechs buy it for sulfate clay along the Interstate 35 corridor, where lime alone fails. Same powder, different conversations, and we have both.

The FM 3338 widening in Webb County is the job TxDOT wrote the slag-lime special provision for, and a section near Eagle Pass tested above 32,000 ppm sulfate. Slag-lime is the only researched stabilizer for soils like that.

Price the treated yard, not the ton. A slag cement mix replaces 35 to 50 percent of the portland, and a slag-lime stabilization uses one sixth the lime of a straight lime job. Delivered cost per ton of slag tells you very little. Cost per cubic yard of concrete, or per ton of treated soil, is the number that decides the job, and we will quote it that way if you send the mix or the dosage.

Whether a specific stabilization spec item accepts slag-lime is a district decision. TxDOT has already written a special provision for it, and we can point you to it.
Pneumatic tanker in about 25-ton loads for most jobs. For steady volume in the big metros, rail to a local terminal. Freight is the largest part of the delivered price outside Houston, so quantity and schedule matter more than anything else when we quote.
On clay above about 7,000 ppm sulfate, lime alone forms ettringite and heaves the ground. TxDOT research found 5 percent slag cement with 1 percent lime cut swell from 42 percent to 7 percent on the same soil. The high-sulfate belt runs along Interstate 35 from Sherman to Eagle Pass, which is why slag-lime matters most outside Houston.
Both cut cost and heat in concrete. Slag is finer and more reactive, with higher late strength and better sulfate resistance. Class C fly ash sets faster and dries wet material. We supply both statewide, so the honest answer depends on your spec and schedule, and we will tell you which.
